The tui parakeet is a small parrot with long, narrow tail feathers that reaches 15 cm (6 in) in length and 25–30 g (0.9–1.1 oz) in weight. The upper plumage is bright green, the head has a grayish-blue iris ring; the lower plumage is light blue, and the chest is white with some black markings. With a bright yellow head, neck, and underparts with bluish under tail coverts; the tui parakeet is mainly green with faint blue scaling on its back and wings.
