The Plum Headed Parakeet is a member of the Psittacidae family which consists of true parrots. The only species currently recognized within this monotypic group is the Plum Headed Parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala). They are found mainly in Sri Lanka and India, where they inhabit the foothills of the Himalayas. Both female and male plum-headed parakeets have bluish-grey wings with distinctive patches of red and orange feathers on their upper back. As in most parakeets, the bill is relatively short and pointed, with a culmen length of 9-11mm.
