The total length ranges from 24–27 cm (9.4-10.6 in). It is mainly green with pale bluish crown feathers, a pale grayish beak, grayish white legs and dark gray iris. Typically the underside of the wing is yellow.
The head feathers are blue and cover most of the head, but they are not as colorful. The tail feathers are long and same color as the rest of the body. It has a unique coloring compared to other types of parrots; the coloring on top of its head. It lacks the yellow markings of some other members of the genus but the long tail feathers are edged yellowish in birds from north of the Amazon River. The Latin name means “sharp-tailed”, referring to the distinct tail.
