Once he starts trusting you their taming sessions are bound to go fruitful. So you must manage to have a bond with your bird first, and then move to the art of taming. Budgies need comfort around them and it is your duty to offer that comfort to them. From the very first day let him settle in his new cage. He may be investigating his new toys and new family. You just need to sit and let him adapt at his pace and comfort. Keep his cage a bit close to you and spend your time doing normal regular activities around him. Let him notice you interact without touching. Now when your budgie knows you and you have learned about his behavior too, it’s time to have a gentle interaction. Just sit quietly close to his cage and talk to him without touching. Be patient and don’t increase his anxiety. Don’t look at him directly. Be gentle in your voice while interacting with your new family member. Offer him some bits of spray millet. After having made your bird a little comfortable, it is time to open the door and place your hand inside his cage. Open the cage gently so as not to rouse your budgie. You can start the taming sessions after opening the cage if your budgie comes out by himself it’s half the battle won, but if this doesn’t happen,  pick a piece of millet and place it on your finger. What if budgie doesn’t come out of the cage? Many budgie parents come across a point where even after repeated efforts they are unable to even nail the first step of taking the bird out of the cage. In this case, there is a way out but it must only be used as a last resort. Firstly darken the room a little. Be gentle towards your budgie and take him out of the cage. He may flutter around scoop him up and hold him with extremely gentle hands. You have to be careful with the hand tank. He may nip your finger but do not jerk your hand away when he bites. Yes, they hurt but are not unbearable. Twitching away may treat him how to escape from you. Move your index finger close to him and encourage him to step on your finger. Speak to him in a soft manner. Praise him as he’s a very nice bird. He may not understand what you have said but he’ll know that you are happy with him.

Say step up as a verbal hint when you do this. Remember to use the same verbal hint each time you want him to step up if your budgie is still shy you can again take the help of a millet spray. Make your hands still when he’s onto your finger let him be comfortable with your hand. Walk some steps into your home keeping him on your finger. Repeat this taming session two or three times a day.
